The Colossus of Rhodes
The narrative recounts the violent historical events surrounding the Greek island of Rhodes during the 4th century BC, where a brutal siege by Macedonia led to significant casualties. However, the tide turned when Egypt sent reinforcements to assist the beleaguered islanders, leading to a Macedonian retreat after a year of conflict. In a celebratory act of defiance, the islanders melted down weapons left behind by the Macedonians to create the Colossus of Rhodes, a 105-foot statue of the sun god Helios that became an ancient wonder. This monumental statue attracted visitors from around the world, serving as a symbol of resilience and victory.
The Birth of Roadside Attractions
Lucy the Elephant, a 65-foot wooden structure built in 1881 by real estate developer James V. Lafferty, marked the inception of American roadside attractions. Lafferty's creative decision to construct Lucy aimed to entice potential buyers to his coastal land by offering a bizarre spectacle right next to the train tracks. This approach proved highly effective, leading to a boom in quirky roadside attractions across the nation as car travel became popular in the 1920s and 30s. Soon after, towns began erecting giant oddities like oversized food items, characters, and figures to capture the attention of road-tripping travelers.
The Mystery Spot Phenomenon
The podcast delves into various gravity-defying attractions, particularly the Oregon Vortex, where strange visual phenomena occur, leading to the perception of gravitational anomalies. The concept originated with John Lister, who purported to discover a natural gravitational anomaly and conducted experiments. George Prather later opened the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot, creatively engineering an optical illusion to replicate the effects of the Vortex. Despite being the subject of legal disputes over originality, both attractions gained popularity, drawing visitors intrigued by the blend of optical trickery and eccentric folklore surrounding these sites.
Folklore is often confined to circles around the campfire or whispered stories at slumber parties. But for a time in America, people turned folklore into things worth traveling to see. And their methods were rather tricky.
