The transcendent function is a foundational concept in Carl Jung's psychology, first formally introduced in his 1916 essay of the same name. Written when Jung was 41, this essay reflects a pivotal moment in his life and career—following his split with Freud and during his difficult confrontation with the unconscious. In fewer than 10,000 words, it lays the groundwork for much of Jung’s later theories, including the shadow and the practice of active imagination, marking the early development of his unique approach to psychological transformation.
