VVECMO - What Are the Major Indications?

The majority of patients treated with VVECMO today have what we call ARDS, or the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Other conditions that VV ECMO would be used for include status as manicus or severe forms of hypercaptic respiratory failure and also as a bridge to a lung transplant. This is typically in patients with cystic fibrosis, maybe in patients with interstitial lung disease who don't have some competent pulmonary hypertension. And specifically, when you're caring for a patient on ECMO, what are your oxygenation and CO2 removal goals?
