The History of the Whisky Rebellion
Hamilton lobbied for the nation's first domestic tax on distilleries in western Pennsylvania. The east was dominated by large-scale, industrial distilleries; west was mostly individual farmers. Under Hamilton's new whisky tax, people paid based on how much they made, transported, and sold. It was the beginning of the United States' first real civil strife, the whisky rebellion.
