Narcissistic supply is something that narcissists need to have in order to feel like they can function. So their entire life is spent on avoiding shame and regulating their fragile self-esteem even at the expense of others. And oftentimes, if they're more covert and skilled, then what you will see is someone who's in fact very charming or comes across even somewhat weak where the therapist gets into the role of taking care of the narcissist.
