The enemy of creative work is boredom, and the friend is alertness. There's nothing like an unfamiliar problem to make you start focusing. If things feel out of your control, maybe even a little dangerous, that gets the adrenein flowing. This attention grabbing effect applies whether we're talking about trying to play a strange instrument or navigate a strange place. And while it sounds dramatic, it can work its magic at a subliminal level.
