How Did You Become a Philosopher?
Philosophy was an expression of my temperament for years before it was part of any institutional program. My first teacher in philosophy was an inspirational but dangerous figure. He could swing from being brilliant and inspiring to being destructive in his relationships with students. On his good days, which there were many, he had the gift not just for making things exciting, but for making this whole world just seem open and available to a hungry young mind.
