The sisters sent a delegation to Jesus, and it took time for them to get to Jesus. It's likely that Lazarus died as the messengers were on the way toJesus. So why does Jesus then stay? He didn't want any doubt that what he was going to do was a real resurrection. Most of the book of John actually is written to confirm Jesus' divinity.
