The Evolution of Shamanism
I think shamanism, like many topics in anthropology has been saddled with this problem of having a particular expectation and projecting it onto the society. And I think the study of shamanism is still quite wary of that. The way that I really think about shamanism is that it's made performing deviations from normal humanists to assure you that I can do things that normal humans cannot. This can be used for good or exploitation. You know, sometimes in the same society, it's used for both. It'll depend on the context as to how much that is kosher.
