There's a new theory that argues that these weird earmuff blobs might be Thea. They're denser than the rest of the mantle and they're massive, larger than continents. In this theory, the Earth swallowed Thea and the moon is an orb of melted Earth flung into space from the collision. But you know, this theory is going to be hard to prove.
