The Black Consciousness Movement of Azanian
The meaning of Blackness as coming out of the Black Consciousness Movement has these two components. One is this subjection to group race depression, you know, those who are sort of discriminated against by the state and things like that. The other element of Biko Black, or the Black consciousness definition of Black, was about self-identification. It's a sense of standing up and identifying with something and giving it a positive evaluation. As he says, describing yourself as Black, you have started on a road towards emancipation.
