The international airport is on the northeast edge of kabool and densely populated residential areas are to its southwest and northwest but they're also a bit of a buffer of open terrain around much of the airport. The taliban could not stand shoulder to shoulder to secure the airport perimeter because it was far too large of a land mass. Best way to locate the checkpoints was good old-fashioned walking and looking with the taliban executing people trying to escape.
