The One-Dimensional Picture of China
Cathy Chen of the Wall Street Journal in the early 90s wanted to do a piece about the migration of people from the countryside to the work in the factories. Because she looked local, she was actually able to get into the factory and look around and get into their dormitory. She wrote an absolutely wonderful piece that humanized this instead of, you know, millions of people moving. It would be next to possible to do that today. You'd be very hard pressed to find a foreign affairs office, office anywhere who felt there was any political advantage in being seen to help an American journalist. And China loses because it further accentuates this one dimensional portrayal.
