It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Van Lathan of the Higher Learning podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s dropping popularity (thanks to Elon), budding GOP criticism of the Trump/Musk regime, Trump’s dismantling of the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, Trump’s funding freeze and mass firing, Elon’s CPAC appearance, RFK’s anti-vax maneuvers, Texas’ (definitely unrelated) measles outbreak, Israel’s best attempts to kill their Gaza ceasefire deal, and the confirmation of Kash Patel, also watching a flush-red MAGA district lay into Rep. Rich McCormick over Trump’s insane executive coup. Mike Figueredo then joins, jumping right into his initial reactions to the Trump/Musk regime’s sweeping destruction of the US government, before stepping back to expand a little on the particular insanity that is being a Democratic constituent at this point, with the overwhelming backlash to the impotence of Democratic Congresspeople finally boiling over at town halls and Democratic Leadership’s media events. After expanding on the genuinely shocking rate at which Trump is executing the Project 2025 blueprint, Figueredo and Emma look to the impact of the Trump regime on emboldening cultures of bigotry in the US, from DHS’ discrimination against queer folks to the suicide of a young Latina child after facing rampant anti-immigrant bigotry, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need for the Democratic Party to advance an agenda of actual political change if they want to escape from the fascist quagmire of the last few election cycles. Van Lathan and Emma then dive deep into the state (surprisingly positive) of the Leftist media ecosystem, the utter failure of the Democratic Party to identify, speak to, or govern for their base, and why MAGA’s obsession with liberal defectors is so enchanting to reactionary media figures. Lathan implores Emma to dip her podcasting toes into pop culture, before wrapping up by touching on what he learned from covering Gaza.
And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Nora from Austin about Tim Pool’s fiery foray into NASCAR sponsorships, before touching on Elon’s CPAC meltdown and Rep. Greg Cesar’s pushback to Elon’s labor abuses.
