The study found that when squirrels ate, their bodies were incorporating the urea nitrogen released by their gup microbes into their tissues. The work could have important implications for people who are bedridden because they're in a coma or suffering from muscle wasting. Scientists hope to find out whether enhancing the symbiosis between gut microbes and their human hosts could be manipulated in a safe, beneficial way.
