In 19 89, after nearly seven decades of soviet control, came the collapse of the berlin wall and the subsequent unravelling of the us. The leaders of russia, belleruse and ukraine gathered for a hastily arranged meeting in bellarus. All three countries had agreed to leave the us. Ucranians consistently pushed back against moscow, with high numbers being sent to prison camps. It was a moment of great hope for the country. Eflation fell, the economy grew and investment flooded. But when the global financial crisis hit two thousand and eight, this brief period of confidence evaporated.
