Under quantum physics, elementary particles are undergoing processes of splitting and resolving into different universes. When a photon strikes such a mirror, right, it bounces off in half the universe and passes straight through in the other half. The things that seem to be going on all at once, until we observe them, are still going on when we observe them. And this was most sort of famously argued or given mathematical form by Hugh Everett.
