Mike Rinder went on the road almost immediately trying to squash any sort of criminal case or civil litigation that might come up in relation to Scientology. Negative press was poison at this critical juncture in the church because even though David Miscavige had jettisoned most of Hubbard's adventurous romanticism, he shared one of LRH's more practical obsessions with achieving tax exempt status for the church of Scientology. The first step along the road to tax exemption occurred in November of 1987 when the IRS confirmed their investigation into the church had been concluded.
