In 1895, when General Valeriano Whaler was 56, Cuban revolutionaries again declared their independence from Spain. The Spanish military leader in charge of Cuba begged Whaler to step in and suppress the revolution. In 1896, he meets with the Spanish government and tells them how he thinks that they can win this war.
