Identifying Individual Figures in Oral Traditions

Identifying individuals sits at the heart of what makes something history rather than archaeology. I suppose when you're covering longer histories over long periods of time, those figures don't occupy large numbers of pages because you keep moving the story on. So for example, I've got a Maya envoy called Ajpakwal. We know him from his teeth, which are recovered with gemstones fitted to him, one which has not been replaced and has carries around it. And we know him from documentation about how he was sent as an envoy between cities in Central America. But they are there if you want to find them.
