According to steve sloman, there's a big gap between what you know and what you think you know. That gap is called the illusion of explanatory depth. In an earlier version of this experiment, people would be asked if they knew how a sink works. And by understanding that we can't explain in detail the actual workings of that relatively simple physical thing, begin to gain a little humility about what might be a bigger presumption.
