The Limitations of Third Person
With third person you can kind of do whatever you want. The James Joyce story the dead is written in third person with free indirect speech. You have to be very creative and third person to reflect your characters internal world. For me the least enjoyable books that I read are when the writer has used third person but done it in just a really boring functional way.
