Arson in the Civil War

There are a lot of stories in the journals of participants in the Civil War from all sides about watching black soldiers in action. Almost universally there's surprise more than anything like they really thought slaves won't fight. And slaves did fight almost all the time. In fact, they fought better than raw recruits who were not slaves. But they didn't always win. Sometimes for reasons beyond their own control, they lost.
