In our culture, status is often unclear and very mobile and people don't know where they fit. And so being able to punch up is a way is an accepted way to maybe elevate your own status. There seems to be something there like cultures that have more rigid status hierarchies probably have less irony,. Yeah. I guess there's some overlap between irony and making fun of people.
