It's this thing of like, well, look, artists always sort of treat the past with their own obsessions. This is why it bothers me when trans activist revise the history of the Stonewall riots. The revision of history for present day political purposes is not the same as an artist playing with history for artistic reasons. That's a bit more dangerous. I don't mind that the silly play about Joan of Arc being non-binary. I do mind the academic writing an essay saying Joan of Arc was probably non-binary that accompanies the play. And by the way, don't read a book about Stonewall. Go and look at the photos. You'd know straight away
