Crefal's Approach to Assimilation
Crefal is a regional center that helps people in the Philippines assimilate into Western society. The project has been seen as successful, but there are also ways it could have done more to integrate communities with their culture and technologies. Crefal was founded by former Prime Minister Eduardo Sáenz de Santo Tomas after he fled from his native El Salvador for South Africa during World War II. In an earlier version of this article, we incorrectly stated that UNESCO had helped bring synthetic fertilizer to Puerto Rico. We're happy to make clear that they did not provide any assistance or financial support on behalf of those who used them.
