Florence nightingale was convinced that nursing was not for men. As her method spread to australia, canada and the united states, women came to dominate nursing. Men were pushed to the fringes of the field, limited to working in psychiatric wards. By the 19 thirties, men were only two % of nurses in the united states. Even to day, that number is only ten percent. psychologist jenifer bosson says you could spin nursing as a very masculine occupation.
