The History of the CMB Telescope
The blackbody spectrum is basically how physics tells us hot objects should radiate light. With the CMB, it's nearly perfect. Before this, there was no way to detect those one part in 100,000 temperature variations. That measurement led to the Nobel Prize in physics for George Smoot and John Mather back in 2006.
