I think that for me, it's just so essential that we have these conversations. The colonialists met at Berlin to try and carve up the continent. Both history is personal to people. I didn't want this to be an academic exercise. You want to mix both historical information with map reading with novels as well because that's such a great way of capturing, feeling and tone in moments. So I kind of wanted to bring all that together to tell a story that's accessible and understanding to people"
