Detention - What's the Bill Doing Here?
Under the current guidance, if the government is unable to prove someone is inadmissible or unable to organise their removal, after six months they're admitted into the asylum system. The bill would change that and make them permanently and admissible. It also makes it possible for a person to be detained for however long the home secretary deems there to be a reasonable prospect of removal. And essentially, that seems to be empowering the home secretary's interpretation of what a reasonable prospect means - reducing the role of the courts on this issue.
