Luther's Incendiary Criticisms of the Church
Luther's incendiary critiques of the church created, for the first time, an expansionary publishing industry. The townspeople of Germany became a rapacious market for Luther's writings. Gutenberg famously printed a Bible and then promptly went bankrupt because he couldn't get enough people to buy it. In the 18th century as many as two million certificates of indulgences were printed in Europe.
