Undeceptions with John Dickson

CHAPTER

The Life and Times of Mary Sayers

Sayers fell in love with a man called John Corners, who was part of the Bloomsbury set. She wouldn't sleep with him before marriage on the basis of her Christian convictions. And also wouldn't use contraception because she was an Anglican. They separated and he then went off to America and within a few months got married. He'd said to her, I will never get married on principle. That's why they'd separated. So it emerged from their letters that he had wanted her to surrender on that point and then probably would have married her. The Lambeth Doctor is published by Hodder & Stoughton at £16.99.
