The Relationship Between Moral Responsibility and Consciousness
No matter what your view is, you should think that we need to be conscious of the moral significance of our actions in order to be responsible. This view is driven by the neuroscience. It's a condition of being an agent who can pursue projects and plans over time that you have a relatively consistent practical identity or evaluative stance. If you don't you get radically disunified behavior. For people like you and I though we're relatively well unified which isn't to say that we're perfectly coherent.
