Is There a Gap Between Computing and Mind?
Computation cannot realize understanding, deep mathematical insight or consciousness. There exists a gap between what can be achieved by computational processes alone and that which can be achieved using humans potentially using computer tools. Any commitment to the view that suitably program computers can actually understand natural language is quasi religious. It masks a deeper commitment to a particularly pernicious form of substance dualism. The underlying confusion between epistemic and ontological concerns is neatly foregrounded in the following. We might model a cow lactating, a plant photo synthesizing or the physical properties of gold by computational processes.
