Lincoln was never close to his father at all. There were rumors that Thomas Lincoln was not the father of Abraham Lincoln. His grandmother had been illegitimate. He worried about his own legitimacy and thought that he was the product of a sort of the back stairs. That did, as you just alluded to, it did create this impetus, I believe, to prove that he was legitimate,. And that's a powerful, powerful force.
