the hospital, Guangchun felt completely abandoned by the embassy staff who left him. He told us he blamed Obama himself. Guangchun believes the president had told embassy staff to prioritize the US relationship with China over his well-being. But on his way from the embassy to the hospital, a reporter had slipped Guangchun a cell phone. And that first night, when he and his family were left by themselves, Guangchun started making calls. Tangbiao later published the transcript of his call. The two friends exchanged greetings. Tangbiao tells Guangchun that the people who care about him are hoping he could find a way to leave China and get to the United States. Guangchun seems taken aback by the suggestion. But Tangbiao is adamant. Guangchun has been told that he and his family would be safe at NYU Shanghai. But Tangbiao insists that the government would be to pay any promises of amnesty it made.

I persuaded him not to listen to the Chinese government. He will not be safe.

And he will not be able to continue his human rights activism if he stays in China. And then I strongly persuade him to go to the United States.

While Guangchun was under house arrest, Tangbiao had been kidnapped by Chinese authorities. He endured torture and months of detention, so did dozens of other legal activists. In fact, 2011, the year before Guangchun's escape, has seen the harshest crackdown on legal activism in over a decade. Guangchun and Tangbiao spoke
