The Tragic Legacy of the Russian Army After the Fall of the Soviet Union
The tragedy is that Russia passed from Yeltsin's hands to Putin's because unlike Yeltsin Putin could not escape his Soviet upbringing. The thing that was peculiar about the Soviet Union was that even more than Tsarist Russia and as a matter of policy, the Soviet state brutalized its citizens. As the Russian leadership has found itself in a hard spot, it's reached for what it regards as grit, but which is in fact just brutality, thuggishness, viciousness and criminality.
