Information Bureau Inc., or OIB, was the kind of institutional boring corporation that handled FinTech before FinTech turned cool. In late January and early February 2000, OIB received a series of unsolicited emails from an individual going by the name Substa,. He claimed he'd secretly obtained root passwords for some of OIB's sensitive computer systems. For $10,000 he'd not only exit those systems, but he'd also help repair and harden those systems against future, similar attacks.
