Synthetic Biology

The cell did not evolve to enable synthetic biology, but these properties do enable it, at least to some extent. There's a huge variety of applications for cells that can be little factories that produce drugs, materials and fuels. The other side of it is this ability to kind of learn about principles of biology by tinkering with the cellular level.
