The Isolated Forearm Technique
Historically, back when people didn't know how anaesthetics worked, you could be conscious but paralyzed. The most serious forms of awareness under general anaesthesia are the ones where people are completely awake but paralyzed. Now that does still happen, and that is generally a medical error, but it's very, very rare. We wire people up to lots of monitors to look at all their physiological variables - heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure. And obviously what the surgeon is doing, we'll have an effect on that as well as what we're giving.
