The library was as he remembered it, rose and rose of dusty shells bearing equally dusty books. The gas lanterns that lit the vast interior were few and spaced so far apart that there were huge pockets of darkness where their lights did not reach. A gas lantern spilled warm light onto the librarian's desk, illuminating the blood-red rotary phone he had sold the old one.
