Changing a Country's Name Isn't a Native Speaker's Choice
If the country itself is asking for a name change, we'll grant it. So mumba is not bombay, and bajing is no longer peking. With some spanish place names, there's a tendency towards hatamalsation but not by everyone. But european names don't get changed unless there is a big news event which tells us we've been getting it wrong.
