The Best Regional Policy Is Now China Policy

Labour's approach to China is directed very much at a regional audience. We need to be seen to be polite, reasonable and open to working with Beijing in order to maintain our credibility with the region. The best thing Washington can do is demonstrate that it is doing everything within reason to help prevent war. That means talking, that means guardrails, that might mean losing a bit of face,. sending a succession of officials to Beijing. But such a collective effort first requires the US and Australia to build support within regional capitals by establishing credibility as reasonable actors.
