I think too often what you see in some non fiction are books that simply confirm what we already believe, and try to do that in clever ways. I wanted to contest this idea because based on my research when i was formulating the idea, and then my subsequent research. This idea that we should be resolutely positive, that we shouldn't look backward, is wrongit it is wrong. It's a completely useless blueprint for living. My father has said to me over the years that he has no regrets. You can say, i'm happy and grateful for the life that i have, but i do have some regrets. One doesn't extinguish the other.
“Embedded in songs, emblazoned on skin, and embraced by sages, the anti-regret philosophy is so self-evidently true that it’s more often asserted than argued.” So writes Daniel Pink in his new book, “The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward.” There’s just one problem, he adds. The “no regrets” philosophy? It’s hogwash. Regrets may churn our stomachs, but they also improve our decisions and strengthen our values. They’re a photographic negative of the good life.
