There are a cog in that machine helping effectuate this incredible, beautiful, complex thing. They're not doing something bad. They're doing what's necessary. In Thailand to see explained of course being a Buddhist culture they believe in karma they believe in reincarnation. It cannot be mind blowing lay shocking to the West but from their point of view one of the biggest gifts in Peter's books is giving us a window into their mindset.
