I'm not against the option to add a phone number because it is a very easy lookup method for people who have a low threat model. I just hate that it's mandatory. Once they add usernames, as long as the phone number can be made not publicly searchable, in my opinion, I think that will get rid of a lot of the concerns I have with the Signal phone number thing.
