The Environmental Consequences of Mining in Appalachia

In 30 years in Appalachia, they've basically converted about 2,000 square kilometers of mountains to active and reclaimed surface mines. But what we're talking about in China is actually leveling mountains and using the debris to fill the valleys in order to create land. So there are some interesting parallels in the arguments made for doing this really remarkable engineering of the landscape.
