In the late tenth century, a monk named aldered added his own contribution to the gospels. The purpose of glossing a text is hotly debated. Some scholars suggest it indicates a decline in the ability to read latin. Others suggest it was a study tool to help learn latin. And yet others suggest that it was a way to help readers find their place in the text.
