What Is the Authority of the Law?
The word law has a Hebrew word underneath it that I've taught on many different occasions. What Christians call the Pentateuch and Jewish tradition is called Torah. In Israel's life, in Jesus's day, that forms the heart of their scriptures. That's where God's people go to learn God's will. And so what stuns people is that Jesus sets himself as an authority totally independent of the teachers of the Torah.
