The End of the Payphone Booth

As recently as 2005, there were 30,000 payphones in the city. About 1,200 of them have been replaced by link NYC kiosks which now offer a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Museum of the City of New York has an excellent exhibit called Analog City that explores how pre-digital technologies like the telephone and others helped the city thrive.
